You Can Do It! PDF Print E-mail

At Clover Hill State School we want our students to achieve and be motivated. We want them to be successful and so we have introduced at all levels of the school the "You Can Do It!" program.

The " You Can Do It!" program was developed from research that shows that successful, achieving students hold attitudes about themselves and their schoolwork - especially hard or boring work - that are different from underachieving and poorly motivated students. The YCDI program advocates that social and emotional development programs should not be bolted onto the academic agenda. Rather, YCDI seeks to have schools cross the line in the sand and focus on high achievement AND social-emotional outcomes for students.

A major goal of our “You Can Do It!” program is to weaken negative Habits of the Mind and offer students coping skills and strategies to eliminate these Blockers. A the same time, the “You Can Do It!” program seeks to strengthen positive Habits of the Mind and provide students with knowledge and skills to develop the Foundations. We are helping to turn children’s thinking from “I CAN’T” to “I CAN” - from “I WON’T” to “I WILL” from “I DON’T KNOW WHERE” or “HOW AM I GOING TO GET THERE” to “I WANT TO ACHIEVE AND I HAVE A PLAN” from “I CAN”T GET ALONG” to “I KNOW HOW TO GET ALONG”.

The Foundations are the “Keys to Success and Happiness”. The 5 Keys are:

Confidence means...feeling I can do it. Confidence also means not being afraid to make mistakes or try something new. Confidence also means standing up tall and speaking with a clear voice. It involves raising your hand to answer a hard question, sharing a new idea, saying ‘hello’ and talking to someone new.

Persistence means….trying hard and not giving up when something feels like it’s too hard to do. It means not being distracted by others, completing work on time, checking over finished work to make sure it’s correct, continuing to try even when the work is hard.

Organisation means….setting a goal to do your best, planning your time so that you are not rushed and having all your materials ready. It involves making sure you understand the instructions before beginning work, having a neat desk and room.

Getting Along means….working well with others, solving problems with others without getting angry as well as following the rules of the school and classroom. It means helping others with their work, managing your temper when someone is mean to you or doesn’t do what you want. It involves talking rather than fighting when someone treats you unfairly and listening (not interrupting) when someone else is speaking.

Emotional Resilience means…..not getting extremely angry, worried or depressed. It means calming down when you do get very upset—not fighting or staying away from people when you are upset. It involves bouncing back to work or play.
